College Supplies and More!

College-Ahead

It’s nice how in elementary school, middle school, and junior high you’re told exactly what supplies to buy for your first day of school. You know what you will need for the year and there is no wondering if you should get this or get that. Well, college is a little different. Until you go to every lecture and every lab, you might not know exactly what you’ll need. However, we have provided you with a solid list of college supplies that every college student always has on hand (stored in their back pack), along with some extra supplies it’s good to have stored in your dorm. The ones highlighted in orange are some I, Corina Hernandez, have found the most important throughout my college career!

  • 2-3 Three-Ring Binders
  • 1-2 regular folders
  • Dividers for binders
  • 1 big spiral notebook with built in dividers OR a few regular sized spirals
  • Highlighters (skinny)
  • Different colored pens
  • Pencils
  • Expo markers (good to have your own for study rooms)
  • White out (Get the good kind, you’ll need it. Get one for your back pack and one for your dorm)
  • Post-it notes
  • 2-3 stacks of notecards for studying
  • An extra phone charger that always stays in your back pack (for those long nights in the library)
  • USB Flash Drive (this will be a lifesaver)
  • Planner (even if you don’t think you need one, you will need one)
  • 3-Ring hole punch (good to have in your dorm)
  • Stapler (regular sized one for your dorm)

A few other tips:

  • If you don’t have a laptop, the library has laptops you can rent. Here is a link to learn more about this option: http://info.library.okstate.edu/laptops
  • Put your class schedule into your phone calendar or a weekly calendar. Go ahead and list the professor and room number somewhere in your notes or planner. It’s always good to have this information somewhere easily accessible.
  • Check your schedule/classrooms the day before classes start. Even if you have a printed out schedule from orientation, sometimes classrooms change days before classes start. I’ve had this happen before and went to the classroom that was originally listed!
  • If you haven’t gotten all of your books, don’t stress! Sometimes professors will announce the first week of class, that the textbooks aren’t required. You could possibly save a few hundred dollars by waiting to purchase your books until the first week of classes.
  • Check out Amazon, AbeBooks.com, or Barnes & Noble to see where you could get your books for the least expensive price. Renting textbooks is always a great way to save a few hundred dollars on books rather than fully purchasing them.
